What is acne?
Acne is an inflammatory skin disease that affects skin pores and oil glands in your face, arms, back, shoulder and chest.
In fact, there are over fifty types of acne, but the most common forms of acne can be classified as:
1. Whitehead - oil breaks through to the skin surface and "plugs" the skin pores.
2. Blackhead - whitehead topped with a black pigment of the oxidized oil.
3. Pimple - small, hard & inflamed raised spot on the skin caused by infected oil glands.
4. Pustules - pimple containing pus.
5. Cyst - an abnormal sac in the skin containing fluid, pus, etc.
6. Redness around a lesion in the skin.
What causes Acne?
The disease attacks two structures in the skin:
1. The pores through which hairs emerge from the skin get plugged - Dead skin cells become more "sticky" and partially
block the pore.
2. The oil glands produce oil in excess
- The production of too much oil gives rise to a generally oily complexion.
Acne formation process:
Acne is caused when oil glands within the hair follicles (pores) of the skin become plugged. When partial blockage in the
pore restricts the flow of oil formed. However, if the blockage becomes complete, oil builds up around the hair and the hair
roots and pores are infected with the bacteria normally present on the skin. The bacteria breaks down the oil into very
inflammatory chemicals that affect the skin, leaving small red infection marks called pimples. If these areas are deep in the
skin, they may enlarge to form soft, pliable lumps under the skin called cysts. The cyst is usually not painful or discolored
unless it becomes infected. However, it is more likely to lead to permanent scarring.
There are four factors involved in the acne process; bacteria, genetics, natural hormones and clogged pores. The presence
of bacteria on the skin will tend to infect the oil glands and cells beneath the skin. Genetics also plays a very important role:
if many members of a teen's family had or now have acne, it is likely that the problem of the oily skin is genetic, and the
teen's skin will be more sensitive than most people. Natural hormones undergo a drastic increase during the adolescence,
causing the oil glands to become overactive. In the end, clogged pores can easily be infected and form acne.
Other factors that promote acne.
Sweating
Excessive sweating can cause partial hair duct obstruction and complete blockage, causing infection and inflammation.
Humidity
Excess humidity can cause acne to flare up in the same way as sweating does.
Medicine
Corticosteroids and anti-epilepsy drugs can often make the acne worse. If this happens, you should speak to your doctor.
Do not stop medication without any medical advice.
Clothing
Continual pressure from headbands, straps securing helmets, collars and hats may cause spots in those areas of skin.
Period and the pill
The female hormone estrogen may increase acne. When hormones increase during the menstrual period, acne may worsen.
Pills that contain estrogen, as well as mini pills, can make acne worse.
Squeezing and rubbing
Never squeeze a spot unless you can see pus. Squeezing blackhead or pimple tends to force oil and bacteria into the
deeper skin layers. If this happens, you may be left with much worse scarring or cyst formation. Excessive rubbing of the
skin actually irritates the skin and increases the quantity of loose skin cells, leading to increased pore clogging.
Conversely, some myths surround what people think when acne is mentioned:
Sun is great for acne
Although sun exposure may temporarily mask acne, tighten up pores or dry up the oil glands, it will also damage pore walls,
resulting in more acne. In addition, excessive exposure to the sun increases the risk of skin cancer.
Masturbation and sexual intercourse
As it helps reducing the stress levels, sexual activity might actually attenuate the aggravating effects stress has on acne,.
However, it is neither a cause nor a remedy for acne.
Diet
Pizza, chocolate, fries, and other junk food also have no effect. There is a small population of individuals (less than 2%) who
might have allergies that bring on acne. So far, scientific studies have not found a connection between diet and acne.
Dirt
The black pigment of the blackheads is due to the coloring of the plug of the "sticky" cells blocking the hair duct. In fact, most
people with acne wash their skin more often than those without the condition in order to clear away the excess oil produced
by their skins. Nevertheless, over-wash can make acne worse by drying and irritating the skin.
Home treatment for acne
Get more sleep
Research indicates that when our sleep patterns are disturbed, the hormone level increases. Increased hormone levels
result in increased sebum production, which leads to more acne. So, get to bed earlier, at least one to two hours earlier
than you usually do. In doing so, you will soon notice that your face is getting clearer and healthier, usually after one or two
days.
Manage your stress
Reducing stress can decrease the hormones and sebum production, which in turn will reduce acne. Aside from eliminating
things that can cause you stress in your life, look into relaxation techniques, which are great for managing stress.
Avoid facial touching
many bacteria that can cause acne flare-ups; so, avoid rubbing, touching, or pinching your skin.
If people still get acne, what can they do to alleviate these problems?
Acne can affect people from ages 10 through 40 and up. According to research, approximately 80% of people, including
teens and adults, suffer from some forms of acne sometime in their lives. However, these people do not really know what
